Marketing interview with Rui M. Nunes from Media Response Group

In the first of many interviews with leading marketing industry figures from Markedu’s key markets in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia, here is an interview with Rui M. Nunes – country manager of Media Response in Portugal.

1. What is your current job function and what was your background prior to that?
Rui M. Nunes country manager of Media Response Group PortugalI’m the Portuguese Country Manager of MediaResponse Group, which is the leading online direct marketing firm in the Portuguese and Spanish speaking languages with a myriad of complementing companies such as Canalmail, LeadtoLead, NewBriefing, EfficientTarget and HOTWords.

My background always have been in the marketing and advertising business (offline and online media), from a simple communications designer to a creative director, and finally more sales oriented account manager to climb the ladder to Country Manager of the entire operation.

1A . Do you work internationally as well?
As a top executive – which is the link between the country’s strategy and the company’s worldwide administration – my responsibilities reach the entire organization since I’m one of the members of the international board where we discuss the worldwide strategy and future developments. As a commercial insight, a great deal of sales are from foreign countries, so my approach is always worldwide and we develop targeted campaigns without boundaries.

2. What are some of the techniques you and your company have found to be most effective for lead acquisition?
Our techniques are always evolving and adapting to trends and to users behaviors. For instance, right now, the technique which is being most profitable has been to send specially designed email pieces for each target, and those pieces have special landing-pages to correspond to the entire communication.

Let me explain:  We set 7 to 10 different email designs (each one dedicated to a special target), and each email, with clear call-to-actions embedded are directed to the same line of communication landing-page of the previous email. Then we set different automatic auto-responders which besides engaging several thousands of people at the same time, gives the client a filter to reach the more interesting leads and then convert a lot better. More than just leads it’s almost a complete e-commerce solution in some cases.

3. How are you feelings about targeting – are new solutions coming into the market that will help advertisers target their audience more precisely?
Technology is always evolving and these days with even more speed. Actually, I think the biggest problem for someone to choose the best solutions to send targeted campaigns is the quantity and noise of several products with similar functions and capabilities. It’s very hard to understand which is better for each problem.

One of the solutions we’re developing is EfficientTarget, which is precisely a targeting communication product that’s transversal to the media to be used. For instance, there are several million users on databases around the world from whom we know a great deal, like gender, occupation, industry sector, age, location and so on… at the same time, we’ve got one of the largest partner network in Portuguese and Spanish language.

Then, why not offer CPM display campaigns to clients who wish to target users that we really know that they’ve got 25 years, from Lisbon, an executive with interest in Bank Loans and Credit solutions? This way, the budget doesn’t go to waste and the client knows that the communication is reaching the right people, even if the site doesn’t usually have that kind of segment.

4. What are the keys to good lead acquisition – for example to acquire newsletter subscribers – do you have any advice you’d like to share?
My advice for that is quite simple and it’s divided in a few steps, but I’m going to focus on a newsletter subscribing campaign:

4.1. Make a clear message about what are the real value for the subscriber to register to that newsletter. What is he going to get with that? Is it some sort of flash news/ instant, vital messages? Do they’ve got access to special discounts and offers? It’s about the quality of the information? Wherever the purpose, make clear and simple to understand.

4.2. Make the subscribing easy and avoid messy programming code (which doesn’t work in the majority of browsers) and huge forms (you can always ask more data in future messages).

See here if Markedu has a free webinar about email marketing and subscription forms

4.3. Make very clear for whom this newsletter is oriented, even if that means that you are going to get less conversions. Why? Because it’s much better to have 20 good and enthusiastic readers than 2000 who don’t connect or give a damn about your product. This is basic, but often forgotten specially by the specialized leads gathering companies that are paid per lead (so it’s in their best interest to grab the most they can).

4.4. Activate auto-responders that can use some of the best content you’ve already sent previously and these new subscribers didn’t get the chance to read it. This creates more impact and engagement.

4.5. Make it clear to the users how to unsubscribe at all times. The reasons are simple: ethics, brand reputation and the because you just want to engage with people who care about what you’re saying (I know I’m repeating myself, but it’s never enough to say it).

5. What do you believe are the current trends in lead profiling – are advertisers more likely to focus on building profiles with including more information than just the basic data?
This is a paradigm. In countries like Spain, England, France and México I notice a will to increase the profiling of their users to engage with them with targeted messages. Obviously creates more responsiveness, their attention and good will if you like. But in Portugal, Italy, Brazil and some other countries in Latin America I notice that companies just want to have the biggest database they can find, not much caring about profiling or targeting their messages. It’s broadcast like a TV or Radio Ad.

6. Last but not least; what do you see as the biggest changes in this industry this and next year?
The biggest change it’s clearly the absolute somersault that marketers need to face. What do I mean by that?

We cannot continue to push our message down the users throats and expect them to buy our product. Mass communication have their advantages in some media and markets, but for a digital direct marketing strategy, we need to respect our consumer and that means to first we bother to ask them or filling down their interests, think about what they really want and then provide valid, quality information. Then, we need to send them just what they ask for it. Respect their wishes and interests. This way we gain their mutual respect and above all, their beloved trust.

What I mean by that it’s obviously to have a transversal system that knows and gather information about their claiming in social networks, in their blogs, in our surveys, in our newsletter tracking system. Show them, that we’re listening.

Alive and Kicking!

Rui_pousada
I'm still alive, you know? I realize that I'm a bit absent from this space for quite some time. So, I'll be posting more posts in a near future.

The reason for this absence is in fact due to other blogs where I'm more regular like in Paixão Automóvel and Blog de Marketing. Besides my usual work, I'm very busy updating these two blogs and a third one is coming up real soon. Why do I have these blogs right now?

It's a bit hard to answer that, since it's not about inmediate profit. No!
Although I think in having some sort of compensation in the medium term, I just like to write about these passions of mine.

This picture above it's me in a "Pousada" which is a luxury lodge in Algarve for the third project I was talking about before. I'm having a good time and I hope you're too.

Always in touch! Be good..

Rebel against Status Quo

Question mark
Photo from Marco Bellucci originally.

Every now and then I need to express myself with a post like this. What do I mean by that?
Quite simple, actually! As the headline claims, I really... let me repeat myself on this one; I really, really think that we need to question the status quo to achieve true progress. Not only when things are bad since then it's easy, but specially when it seems that all is ok. Let me express my point in the next sentences.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE BREEZE
Has it already happened to you, when things are going smoothly and you seem to be a little torpid until you're forced to come alive again by the force of circumstances? Well, did you think about it? Did you questioned if things could be made differently? Yes, it was working the way it was, but did you try to find another way to make the same thing but faster, more productive, more efficiently? Have you noticed this entire paragraph are just questions? Do you understand the meaning of it? Cool.

If you check my previous posts, you find that I question a lot. I really love to make questions and specially to myself. This is how we improve. This is how I break my child and teenage years of formatting in a certain way. Yes, I and probably you were formatted since birth to think and act as a certain standard. The key is to break that format and create your own genesis. This can only be done by questioning everything about your life, your job, your way to do things. Chances are that you're going to find some things that you're going to make in a different way from now on.

BE A SPARTAN AGAINST THE GIANTS
When you're the only one questioning everything, you'll probably find a lot of obstacles. Specially by other peers who don't understand why you need to be the nuisance guy or girl that is always making waves. This can be specially tricky when you're up against your bosses. That's when you need to strip your clothes down (wait, this is a figure of speech), and arm yourself with war paintings (bravery), big and strong shields (patience) and sharp blades (dialogue and clever arguments). Most importantly as we've learned from Spartans Legend, you need to be resilient and keep up against the constant blocks. I'm talking about your owns as well, as we tend to convince ourselves that we've done enough and mined our path to improvement.

HAVE A DEFINED GOAL
There's no use to question everything without some sort of goal. Otherwise it's just planting chaos. You need to have the discipline of questioning something in order to improve something, not to make it worse. Let's give some examples:1. If you're questioning the way you receive your tasks at the office, then try to change that in a way of efficiency, or faster procedure. Don't just make a revolution with no cause. You'll be beaten in the end by a rampaged crowd. I mean it! 2. If you're trying to have a more organized daily agenda where you mix personal and professional appointments, try to find a way to have more time to what's important to you, not to find yourself loaded in a crowded schedule. Have a clear objective to improve something with your questions.

MAKE IT A PART OF YOU
For something like this to work in a long-term, you need to incorporate it at your way of life. You need to become it. Then, you'll find out that you've become more creative, efficient and prepared to whatever it comes in the future. Actually, you'll be the future. You're the one making the changes.

QUESTION ME
Yes, question me. Don't take for granted that this is going to work out for you. I'm no brainiac! Give some other suggestions to this article. Make use of the comments bellow if you want to express your thoughts.

Quality!

Attention to detail

So, here's the thing: Quality has won. This means a big responsibility!
This means that I need to provide excellent posting quality every single time.

Does that scares me? Sure it does!
Does that give me more stamina to accomplish that? Oh yeah!

So here's the thing. When I make such goals it's like a big guideline for me to follow every single day. This is a great guideline for everyone to follow through: quality!
When you aport quality to everything you do, speed and short deadlines explode in a million pieces and a sudden light come above the rubbles. Whow... this is too spiritual. I didn't mean that.

What I mean is that quality isn't something that we can do just from time to time. This is something that we need to treasure and make it grow every single day. Let it make part of yourself. Be a personal characteristic. Make it your character.
My family were very humble with few resources as I grew up, but something they accomplish very well. The family values. One of several of those values has being something that has followed me ever since: "If you're going to do something, do it right!" it doesn't matter if it is to dump the trash or drive the car to work, or even make a blog post. Make it right. Try to do the best you can do in everything you do. It can be very tiring and it can even be annoying for the ones around you. But in the end, it has become what you are. So, were talking about you... or me in this case.

The pursuit of perfection (even if we know that there is not such thing) and quality are two different things. But it can touch each other in some aspects.

I know that my blog can be improved, my blog posts definitely need improvement, but I'm working on it. Always trying to raise the boundaries. It's just me. Stay tuned ... I thank YOU, very much for the attention granted.

Do you want more quality or more regularity?

It's been a while since I post anything at my blog (since 5th July).
The cruel truth is: I'm busy! I dedicate my time to work (I run three companies) and my family.
It's the spare time that I publish something I want to share at the blog. Also, I've discovered a changing paradigm: If I want to spread something I really care to the people that follows me, I use the twitter or facebook accounts.
The blog is to have a complete and thoughtful dissertation about an issue. Or several issues.

It's was a coincidence that some of the people I follow reached the same conclusions. Loic le Meur (founder and CEO of Seesmic and Le Web conference) had a recent post about precisely that. Paraphrasing Loic and also Justin Kownacki, do you prefer to read low quality posts on regular basis or a more profound and thoughtful post on a lesser frequency?

Reading the comments on both articles and making a quick search for other similar articles, the response is almost the same: Quality is better than frequency! But most important, for me to stay passionate about writing here, I need to insert my believes in every thing I do. And I'm a strong believer that it's better to just publish things I really care about and I have something meaningful to say. It's a question of respect. Respect for you as a reader, respect for the issues I mention and also, respect for me.

So, making this clear, I'll continue to post, but just when I have the time and something I can explore, make the complete homework and expose my ideas about it.

Please, if you have something to say about this, make use of the comments section. It's there for some reason. ;-)

Posterous to Blog

This is great. I'm very happy with Posterous as a tool to blog and spread to my social networks. Why? Because it's so very simple.
If you scan my previous articles before a week a go or later my posting articles were very irregular. Sometimes I posted twice on a day, sometimes it would pass more than a week or two.
One reason is the lack of time, but more importantly, it's the action of sending an e-mail.

We're not distracted by fancy editing functions like on Wordpress or Blogspot. It's just plain content and we focus on it.
This makes me fast and regular, with hassle free.
Thank you, Posterous team.
