Just seen an article at
Maclife that confirms
Things and
1Password applications coming to the recently launched
iPad.
People keep saying to me that the iPad this isn't really necessary. It's just another gadget to spend money to, just a gimmick to influence Apple fans. That we could live perfectly without it because it isn't really anything with a precise function. It's not really a netbook, not an mobile phone, it doesn't runs a normal OS laptop system and processor. People can't really abdicate from their other devices to substitute for this one.
The thing is... It's not supposed to.
This isn't substituting anything. At least for the time being. But it's opening it's one space, a new gender.
Why am I buying it? And believe me, I will. Let's be completely clear. I'm not saying that this is the perfect tool for everybody, but I think there's a lot of people just like me, with my needs.
1. It's portable. It really is. It's much better to carry this iPad than my Macbook Pro 15" with me. And I travel a lot, visiting customers, business partners, my friends, whatever. Carrying a 0.73 kg it's not the same as 2.49 kg.
2. It's more handy. It's different to have a always on system, that you simply pinch the central button and the system is there, ready for you check your emails and reply or forward them. See how the business and advertising campaigns are doing (yes, there's an app for that). Reach your CRM with the touch of a finger and browse seamlessly. Entering the subway or train, or whatever, and rapidly continue to read the article or listen your music library, watch your favorite show, etc, etc, etc... It's all there by seconds. You don't have to start your computer and then shut it off. Even in a Mac it can take almost a minute for this two things. If you're a mobile guy like me, minutes and seconds count. If I could do this with an iPhone? Yes, I could. But it's not so practical as with the iPad. Larger screen and spacier keyboard makes all the difference.
3. Battery huge life. One of the things that makes me crazy it's the constant recharging of my iPhone. It's always begging for a little more juice. But it's understandable. If you have GPS location apps running, as downloading a lot of emails like I do, processing a lot of graphics like I do, this happens to other devices as well. The expected 10 hours uptime browsing the web its heaven.
4. Secure and Debugged. People say that a Mac OS X on that tablet would be screaming. I kind of agree, but let's face it. It's not designed to be a replaceable macbook. It's not for hard work, making dreamweaver, photoshop or big applications. For that you have the Macbook. This is to have a clean, fast and always on platform, that's secure and free of trouble due to the filter approval segment on the iTunes App Store. People say that's a censorship method, but actually it's that approach that makes their products stable and crispy.
5. Opens Possibilities. I'm a multi-tasked time managed executive, a father of two, a husband, a friend of few, all around nice kind of guy. Which means: Absolute no time to read articles, RSS, newsletters, books, watch podcasts, and so on. This makes my dead hours useful again. In transit (when not driving, ok??) I can catch up with missed things. I couldn't do this with the other devices because it didn't felt right.
6. Funny Gaming Platform. I guess the
PSP or the
Nintendo could be more powerful, but the total interaction of the iPad makes all games a delight. And I don't need to carry another gadget along.
7. Increasing apps. No doubt about it. All software houses are going to fill the App Store with incredible and ever capable applications that would turn this new gadget on a reference, like the iPod and iPhone were.
8. 3G built-in. Wifi could be sweet on other parts of the world, but in Portugal almost any hotspot it's payable or you need and account. 3G works much better. You just have a data plan with a negotiated operator and that's it.
In short. I'm not going to substitute my Macbook Pro or my iPhone. But the iPad is a great working fun tool and to me it's even more useful. Let's face it. I read more emails, work on Numbers, Pages and Previews apps, check my professional social networks more than I use other more resource needed systems.
Now, let's see when they have one available to me. ;-)
