How Can You Make a Better Product Tutorial

Video
I use 37Signals products like a maniac. I'm a huge fan and probably have an account created in each product they open to public. The reasons, to my understanding, are quite simple:

* Seamless usage of every product.
* Sufficiently low core with a just a few settings making a more adaptable product to every market.
* Completely clean of unwanted screen clutter.
* Clear and useful.
* Scalable as we need.
* Secure and reachable wherever we are (if we have an Internet connection, obviously).
* Accessible from Apps and Browser alike.
* Simple is their common word.

So, making it short: They're aiming for easiness of usage and more focused at the main functions, choosing to have less features but being more practical and efficient. And they've got it.

One of the things I find extremely useful in these web apps or SAAS (Software As A Service) is video tutorial. In these short videos if they are well made, we can grasp the main functions and features, making it simple to understand how to use it and what are the main benefits.

WHY DO I CARE?
But why am I making this huge introduction and free publicity for this products? Well, the first reason is because I really like their stuff and I really recommend it to everyone who need to have an organized information Mojo. The second reason is because, even being a very high user of their products I still didn't get to understand the real power of BackPack™. I've entered this product and watched a few video tutorials but didn't catch the value of using it. Then, all over the sudden I got it, after viewing a simple video never watched before with a fresh eye. And still the video isn't clear about it. I've understood the main value of it because I'm already a heavy user, but if I wasn't then the problem could be bigger.
And this happened with a company that are great making things simple.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO ABOUT IT?
This is transversal to every company showing their products. I think the main problem is that we assume other people will see it as we do, but they don't. They don't have mine/your background, so don't assume they do. You may loose some interesting clients making these small mishaps.
Sometimes, or better saying, every time we need to make a product description or presentation by written content or rich media, we should be advised by external people. If they understand, then it's most likely to be understood by a bigger majority of people, don't you think?

Aiming for Excellence

This is something I care very much about. And there's a very simple reason why: When you aiming for excellence, even though you already know that it can't be perfect, you can achieve greatness. You achieve greatness if you work to achieve it every day without compromise. Which means not to be satisfied with just OK.

It's hard, I'm not saying it's not. But when you make an effort, wonders can happen. All over the sudden, you spread your intents to everybody around you. Others become influenced by you and start acting like that. And when you know it, it becomes easier by the day. Now, it's inside you. It's natural!

Rebel against Status Quo

Question mark

Every now and then I need to express myself with a post like this. What do I mean by that?
Quite simple, actually! As the headline claims, I really... let me repeat myself on this one; I really, really think that we need to question the status quo to achieve true progress. Not only when things are bad since then it's easy, but specially when it seems that all is ok. Let me express my point in the next sentences.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE BREEZE
Has it already happened to you, when things are going smoothly and you seem to be a little torpid until you're forced to come alive again by the force of circumstances? Well, did you think about it? Did you questioned if things could be made differently? Yes, it was working the way it was, but did you try to find another way to make the same thing but faster, more productive, more efficiently? Have you noticed this entire paragraph are just questions? Do you understand the meaning of it? Cool.

If you check my previous posts, you find that I question a lot. I really love to make questions and specially to myself. This is how we improve. This is how I break my child and teenage years of formatting in a certain way. Yes, I and probably you were formatted since birth to think and act as a certain standard. The key is to break that format and create your own genesis. This can only be done by questioning everything about your life, your job, your way to do things. Chances are that you're going to find some things that you're going to make in a different way from now on.

BE A SPARTAN AGAINST THE GIANTS
When you're the only one questioning everything, you'll probably find a lot of obstacles. Specially by other peers who don't understand why you need to be the nuisance guy or girl that is always making waves. This can be specially tricky when you're up against your bosses. That's when you need to strip your clothes down (wait, this is a figure of speech), and arm yourself with war paintings (bravery), big and strong shields (patience) and sharp blades (dialogue and clever arguments). Most importantly as we've learned from Spartans Legend, you need to be resilient and keep up against the constant blocks. I'm talking about your owns as well, as we tend to convince ourselves that we've done enough and mined our path to improvement.

HAVE A DEFINED GOAL
There's no use to question everything without some sort of goal. Otherwise it's just planting chaos. You need to have the discipline of questioning something in order to improve something, not to make it worse. Let's give some examples:1. If you're questioning the way you receive your tasks at the office, then try to change that in a way of efficiency, or faster procedure. Don't just make a revolution with no cause. You'll be beaten in the end by a rampaged crowd. I mean it! 2. If you're trying to have a more organized daily agenda where you mix personal and professional appointments, try to find a way to have more time to what's important to you, not to find yourself loaded in a crowded schedule. Have a clear objective to improve something with your questions.

MAKE IT A PART OF YOU
For something like this to work in a long-term, you need to incorporate it at your way of life. You need to become it. Then, you'll find out that you've become more creative, efficient and prepared to whatever it comes in the future. Actually, you'll be the future. You're the one making the changes.

QUESTION ME
Yes, question me. Don't take for granted that this is going to work out for you. I'm no brainiac! Give some other suggestions to this article. Make use of the comments bellow if you want to express your thoughts.
